Good Morning! Oct 18, 2013 TODAY IN ROCK HISTORY: The father of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Chuck Berry, is born. 1926 Gary Richrath is born in Peoria, IL. The REO Speedwagon guitarist stays with the band from ‘71 until ‘89. Though not in Chuck Berry’s league, he ain’t bad. 1949 The late Doobie Brothers drummer Keith Knudsen is born. The Le Mars, IA, native takes up the drums while in high school. 1952 Elvis Presley gets into a fight with two Memphis gas station attendants. As Elvis is getting his car checked, fans gather and he starts signing autographs. The station manager asks Presley to move on. A fight erupts. The two station employees are later found guilty of assault and battery. 1956 Paul McCartney plays his first show with the Quarrymen. He blows the solo on “Guitar Boogie.” The Quarrymen eventually become The Beatles and Paul switches to bass. 1957 The Animals begin their first U.K. tour as headliners. Also on the bill are Carl Perkins and Gene Vincent. 1964 The Jimi Hendrix Experience plays its first major show backing Billy Hallyday at the Paris Olympia Theatre. 1966 Richard Lester’s How I Won The War” premieres in London. The anti-war film features John Lennon as Corporal Gripweed. Lester directed the first two Beatle films (A Hard Day’s Night and Help!) 1967 Led Zeppelin plays their first London gig at the Marquee Club. This is after the group toured Scandinavia as the New Yardbirds. 1968 John Lennon and Yoko Ono are busted for possession of marijuana. The bust, while not a major deal in England, is used in the 1970s as the reason the U.S. government doesn’t want Lennon to immigrate. Actually, the government felt Lennon was a political radical/troublemaker. 1968
