Good Morning! This is Facebook Muse! Words of Wizzdum! They call it a “spacewalk”; they have been calling it that since the first astronaut/cosmonaut floated on the outside of their spaceship. When man finally set foot on the moon they never called that a spacewalk, and for good reason, they weren’t in space, they were on the moon. They called that a “moonwalk” which was not even close to what Michael Jackson looked like when he did his famous moonwalk. Down here on the earth million and millions of people walk every day but they never call it earth-walking! Perception people, that’s what it’s all about. We invent terms so things can be perceived as exciting or extraordinary. What is the difference between a jog, a trot or a run? Marathon runners rarely run, if fact, if they did run full-out they would probably never make it to the finish line. When we think of Lance Armstrong we think of a guy on a bike and when we think of Michael Phelps we think of a swimmer. But is that what they are? When we used to think of Robin Williams we thought of a funny comedian but now we see him as the comedian who committed suicide. The things people say and the things people do change our perceptions. We decide to hang associations on them like runner, swimmer or comedian. On March 18th 1965 Russian/Soviet cosmonaut Alexey Leonov was the first man to float on the outside of a spaceship; he did so for twelve minutes. They originally called it Extra Vehicular Activity or EVA. Somewhere along the line we started calling it a “spacewalk”. Over the years I have since seen many pictures of celestial travelers floating on or near the outer shell of their spacecrafts but again, I have never seen them walking! Before this post it is likely that you have never even heard of Alexey Leonov but now you know him as the first man ever to spacewalk and I didn’t even call it that, I called it an EVA! We have been calling it “spacewalk” for so long that you have decided that that is what it is, even if it isn’t, and its not! There are so many words for the same thing in the English language, kind of like going to the grocery store and looking at the different brands of coffee. Coffee is coffee and walking is walking and people are people. Although different brands of coffee have a distinct flavor it is still just coffee. Although most people can walk, we all walk a little differently and although we are all people we are all not the same. There is no one size fits all for people. I have often wondered why we cannot all just get along. Why does there have to be wars and conflicts? Who are we to try to impress upon the world that our way is the only way? Look, if I say it’s not called a spacewalk than God damn it, it ain’t! There is no other term for it! It’s called a space-float! With all these different words you would think that they could, at very least, use one that closely resembles what it is! So from now on if you don’t call it space-floating I will have to come and kill you! As ridiculous as that sounds this is why we have conflict. We, and when I say we, I don’t mean me or you necessarily but we as a people of the earth have often decided that it is our way or the highway. If you cannot get on board with a particular agenda we will simply have to kill you. Even though we have supposedly evolved into an intelligent species, some still think that killing another human being over ideologies is acceptable; so much as, we whom believe that that is wrong to kill people over ideologies, have decided that it is acceptable to kill the people who want to kill us. We have not evolved as much as one would think! Okay, you can call it “spacewalk” if you want to, I won’t kill you. See that was easy! This has been Facebook Muse!
