I think we are going to get lucky here, says Minister of Energy - TopicsExpress

I think we are going to get lucky here, says Minister of Energy and Mines, Bill Bennett of the first batch results from water samples of Quesnel Lake and Quesnel River are positive. “I’m not an engineer, I’m not a geotechnical person and I’m not a chemist, but we all know the company has been saying throughout this that they’re pretty confident about the quality of the water in their tailings pond and they’re also pretty confident about what is in their tailings. Today at 9:00, they posted on their company website what’s in their tailings and what it looks like to me – as a non-technical person – is there is a really good chance we’re going to get lucky here. “There is a really good chance we’re going to get lucky. “As we all know, this is not an acid-generating mine. As most of us know -- because a lot of you work in the mining industry and you live around mining – if you have a mine that mines rock that is not acid-generating, you don’t have that process that you do with acid rock that leaches the other minerals out of the rock and into the water. “We don’t have that here with Mount Polley. The company has been saying that, and we’ve known that in the Ministry for as long as this mine has been here. That’s just good luck. “That doesn’t explain why the dam breached, and it sure as hell doesn’t give me any relief at all in terms of figuring out why this happened. We’re going to figure this out, I give you my word. And I think we are going to get lucky here. We, as government are going to learn from this and we’re going to make sure this never happens again in this province. “God bless everybody here for praying the way you did at that ceremony, it was a real honour to take part in that.
