Seven-Eleven (7/11) celebrates its 87th birthday today! Now with over 53,000 locations in 16 countries, they are the largest convenience store retailer in the world! Mainly known for their signature item- THE SLURPEE, participating locations celebrate 7-11 Day by giving away a FREE SLURPEE from 11a-7pm while supplies last! A fun fact about the slurpee is that it was not invented by 7-11.., but invented at Dairy Queen! In the late-1950s, Omar Knedlik of Kansas City owned a rundown Dairy Queen. When his soda machine went down, he improvised by putting some bottles in the freezer to stay cool. However, when he popped the top, they were a little frozen and slushy. Folks loved them and started requesting those pops that were in a little bit longer. Realizing he had a surprise hit on his hands, he built a specialized machine using the air conditioning unit from a car! He cranked out slushy soda by freezing a mixture of flavored syrup, water, and carbon dioxide to make it fizz. He called it an ICEE, but when the drink concept was licensed to 7-Eleven in 1965, the company’s marketing department renamed it the Slurpee after the sound made while sipping it through a straw! 7-11 stores sell an average of 13 MILLION slurpees each month worldwide- as for the biggest-selling single Slurpee location in the world? -that title goes to the 7-11 in KENNEWICK,WA! -which locals have dubbed “The Slurpee Factory!” CONGRATULATIONS KENNEWICK for being the Brain Freeze capital of the world- a pretty honorable title to have in beating over 53,000 other locations worldwide! -so make sure you head on down to your world renown Slurpee Factory in Kennewick today from 11a-7p and grab your free cup of Brain Freeze while supplies last!
