Good Sunday morning from Davie Fl. Hope everyone is enjoying this blistering hot weekend. We had a very busy day yesterday at the grove with fruit and tree sales just sizzling. We picked what little lychee crop we had this year and just so no one feels bad it was simply abysmal. We plucked a measly 5lbs from one of our Mauritius trees and that was the total crop for this year here at Benders Grove. So now for the 3rd year in a row virtually no lychees due too 3 consecutive warm winters. We suspect the prices will be through the roof this year for those who are lucky enough to have lychee available, we have already heard a report of Mauritius lychees in Homestead selling for $5lb, we expect that price to more than double as very little fruit is available. One of the services we provide our customers is to help them diagnose problems they may have with their trees. Please keep in mind that we do not allow outside plant material to enter our property. If you are bringing plant material for us to look at, a couple of rules, first all plant material, fruit or insects must be brought in a sealed airtight plastic ziplock. we will happily inspect it OUTSIDE the property. No exceptions, period. Do Not under any circumstance bring citrus, text or e-mail us a picture which works just fine. This is not negotiable under any circumstance. please realize that our trees are susceptible to all and any disease and this is how we make our living. We take extreme care to protect our livelihood. Handling infected plant material can be easily spread by humans, so if you stop by to ask us or show us a problem, please understand we will not be able to allow you onto the property as humans can spread disease, and or bacteria just by handling tree products. We hope you can all understand. With the spread of citrus greening, and Laurel wilt throughout the state, We are taking every precaution to be as careful as possible. Next week we will discuss these threats to citrus and our avocado trees. We got a light morning shower today and hopefully some more beneficial rain will come our way today. Well that will do it for us as we hear the coffee brewing and time to get ready for another day in the grove! Have a fantastic Sunday everyone and dont forget to support local agriculture, your support is vital to the future of South Florida agriculture and the vitality of the small family farm!
