Good Times, Bad Times in Music for Monday 26th January 2015 1948 – John Lomax, American musicologist (Alans dad) dies aged 80. 1968, Pink Floyd played their first gig without Syd Barrett at Southampton University. They were supported by Tyrannosaurus Rex, (later to be renamed T Rex) featuring Marc Bolan and percussionist Steve Peregrine Took. 1972, Sean Combs (Puff Daddy) father Melvin was shot dead in his car in a Manhattan park aged thirty-three. Sean was aged 2 at the time. 1977, Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green was committed to a mental hospital following an incident when he threatened his accountant Clifford Adams with an air rifle when he was trying to deliver a £30,000 ($51,000) royalty cheque to him. 1980, Prince made his TV debut on the US show American Bandstand. 1986, Allen Collins, guitarist from Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed his car, paralysing him from the waist down and killing his girlfriend Debra Jean Watts. Collins had survived a plane crash in 1977 that killed two other band members. 1989, American singer Donnie Elbert died of a stroke aged 52. He had the 1972 US No. 22 & UK No.11 single I Cant Help Myself, Sugar Pie Honey Bunch, Where Did Our Love Go? and A Little Piece of Leather. 1996 – Stevie Plunder, Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist (The Whitlams) Stevie Plunder was found dead at the bottom of Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains, apparently a suicide. It was the same weekend as their single, I Make Hamburgers, was listed on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 1996. 1998 - S P Leary, Texan Blues drummer (Muddy Waters), dies at 67. 1998 - Shinichi Suzuki, music teacher (Suzuki Method), dies at 99. 2003, Billy Joel was airlifted to hospital after his car smashed into a tree. The singer lost control of his Mercedes S500 and skidded for 100 yards before crashing. The accident happened in The Hamptons, New York. 2011 - Charlie Louvin, American musician dies. (Louvin underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer on July 22, 2010. Doctors expected a full recovery, but the surgery did not go as planned, according to Louvins son Sonny, and he will begin using alternative methods of treatment, going forward. Louvin died in the early morning in Manchester, Tennessee, aged 83.[ 2011 - Gladys Horton, American musician and singer, member of the group The Marvelettes dies in a nursing home in Sherman Oaks, California, following several strokes and years of declining health, aged 65. 2012 – Clare Fischer, American keyboard player and composer dies. He became the pianist and arranger for the vocal group The Hi-Lo’s in the late 1950s. Fischer went on to work with Donald Byrd and Dizzy Gillespie, and became known for his Latin and bossa nova recordings in the 1960s. Fischer suffered a cardiac arrest in Los Angeles, following a minor surgery a few days before. His wife of 18 years, Donna, was at his side and performed CPR. 2014 – Rusty York, American rockabilly singer-songwriter and guitarist dies in Redington Shores, Florida, aged 78.
