Good afternoon residents. Council has added two new areas of focus as part of its new campaign to target illegal dumping activities in the region. The campaign is aimed at curtailing the illegal activity that has plagued certain hotspots in the city through the use of 24-hour surveillance cameras and new penalty signs detailing significantly increased NSW Government fines of $4,000 for individual and $8,000 for corporate offenders. In addition to Scenic Hill – one of Griffith’s famous landmarks and a well-known area for illegal dumping – Council staff will install the surveillance cameras and penalty signs throughout the natural bush land adjacent to Griffith Airport and the undeveloped areas adjacent to Collina, also favourite spots for illegal dumping in recent years. Council’s efforts to combat illegal dumping are part of its wider environmental protection strategy to help keep the local environment safe and clean for the community. “The surveillance cameras at Scenic Hill have produced immediate results with the identification and ongoing investigation of several illegal dumping activities of materials in recent days,” said Griffith Mayor John Dal Broi. “The effectiveness of this campaign has led us to expand the areas of surveillance and we will continue to identify and establish other areas of focus in our fight against this illegal activity, which poses risks to the health and safety of our community,” he added. To date, nearly 8 tons of illegal waste have been removed from Scenic Hill and transferred to the Tharbogang Waste Management Centre (WMC). Some of the Scenic Hill dumping areas currently under investigation are photographed below. If you have questions about the campaign or information related to illegal dumping in our community, please contact the Environment, Health and Sustainability Team at Griffith City Council on (02) 6962 8100.
