Good evening friends, Jason here. With the announcement of the end of the long running manga series Naruto, I just wanted to chime in and talk a bit about my love for anime and manga - and in particular talk about and show off a scene from my favorite series of all time, which I will get into below. This medium of anime isnt really for everyone, and rightly so - many series area a bit screwy or fantastical in their ideas and sometimes those ideas do not transfer over well from Japanese to English. I am fairly picky with my more favored series, but one particular one really strikes my heart chords - Rurouni Kenshin. Rurouni Kenshin is a series set in Japan ten years after the revolution that began the Meiji Era - a time of political and cultural reform in Japan that saw the end of a more feudal society that changed to one of industrial influence. The series in particular follows the character of Kenshin Himura, a former samurai who fought in the revolution for peace and reform, and who was feared as Battousai The Manslayer, the greatest assassin of the period. During the ten years after the war, Kenshin has taken a vow not to kill and began wandering and helping people to atone for the sins that weigh on his heart for the people he killed in his fight. Kenshin himself wields a reverse-blade sword, where the sharp edge of the blade is located in the inside, while the normal side of the blade is blunted - allowing him to use his sword skills in a non lethal fashion. The series is a bit older, airing in the 90s, but unique in many ways. It holds a good look on a real historical period in Japans history, and even features many historical people in roles within the series. It also blends a powerful mixture of action, comedy and drama that works quite well together. It is also not very over the top, as there are no characters with real special powers per se, though the fighting skills of many of the characters would be considered a bit superhuman. The scene below is my favorite from the series. It is from Episode 30, and features Kenshin meeting up with his rival from the Revolution, who is initially there to assess Kenshins fighting ability against a looming threat in the series. During the fight Kenshin loses control of his personality, and reverts back to his persona of the Battousai, and the duel quickly becomes a fight to the death. It is an intricate scene that sets up the tone for the remainder of this particular arc in the series story. Please enjoy, and let me know what some of your favorite anime series are down below!
