Good morning F4T from a cold -wet and windy mountain near Khao Yai area. I remember a few years ago living in England with my Thai wife and planning to come and live in Thailand. I had ideas of living by the sea and relaxing on the beach -having a beer in a bar with fellow ex-pats. When we arrived here is wasnt that simple -we have a big family in BKK and my wife wanted to be near them, nor does she like the beach life and hot sunshine like many Thais. I went in a few bars and realised it was not my style either as I had never been a pub man back home.I hated BKK for about 2 months then suddenly for reasons I cant explain it grew on me and I felt at home and now although I dont stay there I still love the place and love visiting the rest of the family. The river became my passion and I loved sailing down and seeing all the wonderful buildings. I loved the crazy markets and all the food stalls and an occasional beer down Khao San Road seeing other farangs. Eventually the heat of the Big Mango got to me and I fancied living near other family here in Khao Yai area of Pakchong so we bought some land and dreamed of having a resort which we built by the river. A few years of that taught me that I wasnt cut out for caring for tourists as it was like being tied down and getting enough customers was very difficult waiting months for bookings as there are thousands of places and resorts here and not enough tourists. We were flooded out twice and that was the final straw so we sold and moved in the mountains where we are today doing a bit of farming for the fun of it (not much money in it) but the freedom and the small village community is suddenly what I really needed all along. I would say to anyone who fancies living here to take your time when you get here -dont throw money around buying property that you may be stuck with when you get tired. Rent a place and then its easy to move on -try a few different lifestyles until you find what really suits you. I know of guys who spend their life in a bar (my late brother was one) and he rarely left Samui -maybe that was his lifestyle and his choice but apart from being in a different country that is what he would have done in England. Like the old song by Percy Sledge (OK I know most wont remember him) Take Time to Know Her before you decide what really suits you. Have a great day.G F4T
