Good morning, Patriots! AWWWW, Sundays Treasure, what a welcomed relief!!! I want to tell you about my oldest brother, Everett, number 3 in the line of chicks hatched from the union of my mom and dad!! He had two older sisters and had to peddle through 3 more sisters after his birth before he got his little brother, David!! WOOOHOO, was he happy! Everett was given all the common sense the rest of us wish we had!!! Smarter than a whip, he was the only one of us all to go to college!! My dad was injured in an accident, so Everett gave up his scholarship he had been granted, to come home, work and care for our family until Daddy was back on his feet!! THAT is how we USED to do things, AMERICA!! Everett did go back to college, but took a job in the cafeteria and earned his way through to graduate with honors!! I have always thought he would have made a fabulous president!! Obama couldnt even carry this mans books and would have trouble standing in the shadow of THIS MAN!! I hear tell he didnt say I love you as often as he should have, but he showed his love with care, wisdom and being a model of a man to admire. I DO!!! I loved his laugh and twinkling eyes. This man raised 4 children with his wife and everyone of those kids are dandy people. No wooses in this family!! His son Joe is the donor of the kidney I received 12 years ago! Thank you again, JOE!! Welllup….one of the many memories of my big brother, I want to share, is about my first store bought doll! We lived at the end of the earth, seemed like….and when we went to town it was for equipment parts, gasoline or groceries. My momma made my dollies from old socks my daddy had worn out! Always a use for everything….. Buttons were the eyes of my dollies and an embroidered smile graced their faces. Old pillow stuffing or used nylons were their insides. Momma made my clothes, so naturally, my dolly had a matching dress to mine!! One night I left my favorite dolly outside and the dang dog chewed her beyond recognition. Since the closest doctor was in Durango or Cortez, we pronounced Mandy DOA. Her stuffing was all over the yard anyway, as Momma explained, the doctor would have trouble gathering and replacing it properly and she would never be the same. Best we start with a new dolly as soon as a worn out sock became available…. My brother Everett was home on a visit from college, this was before the accident that caused him to take a leave of absence from college. He took pity on his little childless sister and told me things would be perfect….God has a way of turning bad things into blessings. What did he KNOW??!!! It wast HIS dolly……!!! And further more he was JUST A BOY!! Well, I pouted for a month or so, but one day there was a package for me at the post office!!! I NEVER HAD GOTTEN A PACKAGE, BEFORE!! Gollllleee, it was a BIG package!!! I ripped the wrapping from the package, because momma had told me it was from Everett……probably books…. NOPE!! It was a BRAND NEW STORE BOUGHT DOLLY!!!! Yippee KIYAA, KIYOOO!!! I had never even SEEN a store bought doll. She had blonde hair and a blue dress AND WHITE SHOES ON!! I was so overwhelmed I almost stopped breathing!!! What a truly gracious and wonderful gift from my big brother!!! I found when I laid the dolly down she would cry momma and her eyes closed!! Sit her up and her eyes popped open to give me a vacant stare!! Her lips were red, didnt know babies wore lipstick, but she was FINE!! Since I was too young to write, my mom drafted a thank you note to Everett and told him what a blessings Betsy was to my life. I was no longer childless!! At four, that can be a big problem, you see…… This act of kindness and compassion formed what I thought of my big brother from that day forward! When he said it would be ok I knew he would see to it that it was! He went on to manage a local electrical power company in Cortez, CO. Empire Electric Co. was blessed with his common sense approach to everything and flourished under his management!! Many people cussed him for doing his job with an iron fist, but the job got done, on time and to specifications!! If you couldnt cut the mustard, find work elsewhere. What a foreign concept to some of us today!!! People dont want to be told to toughen up, but we need to!! We have people like my big brother Everett to thank for his example and success! He instilled confidence in a little sister and I needed it desperately as my life progressed. Things will be okay if each one of us strive to make it that way for todays children!!! We cant expect them to feel safe and secure, unless WE are willing to take the bull by the horns and MAKE it that way!! Rest in peace, sweet brother, because your little sister loves you with all her heart! I thank you for the lessons of life you left me with!! See you in Glory! Blessings, ME
