Good morning, We are all watching with sadness the events that have taken place in Sydney yesterday and overnight. Our thoughts are with all of those involved in the incident, the families and friends of the people who have lost their lives or been injured and the police officers and authorities who worked so professionally throughout this incident. The Attorney-General’s Department has become aware that the Australian Defence League has been encouraging people to gather and protest. As you know, the Australian Government categorically condemns anti-Muslim sentiments. Threatening violence is illegal, totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The Attorney-General believes it is important that you know that the Australian Government and its agencies are aware of the issues, and will work with you to manage concerns. Community leaders have been very effective in proactively condemning local community violence. We urge you to encourage members of the community not to respond to any provocations and instead report any threats, harassment or violence to law enforcement agencies. It is illegal to intentionally urge violence by one group in the community against another group in the community on the basis of race, religion, nationality or political opinion. If you see anyone making threats, acting in a menacing or harassing manner or undertaking any other criminal activity, please report it to law enforcement agencies. These agencies are equipped to investigate and prosecute offenders in order to protect all Australians and maintain the rule of law within Australia. Information about reporting criminal activity can be found at the Crime Stoppers website or by calling Crime Stoppers Australia on 1800 333 000 or the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400. The Australian Government will continue to support community and religious leaders to spread the message that violence is illegal and detrimental to the vibrant, inclusive and culturally diverse nature of Australia society. In this regard, we welcome initiatives and campaigns such as the statement signed by the Australian National Imams’ Council, the multi-faith prayer vigil held at Lakemba Mosque last night and the #illridewithyou hashtag on social media. If you would like any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Kind regards, Living Safe Together Team Attorney-General’s Department
