Good morning all. One of the many jobs I have to do is Identifying coins. We get so much stuff in, and we are primarily UK coin dealers, though we do also deal in US and foreign Gold; but there are significant gaps in my knowledge, and there are large parts of the world I struggle with. We therefore use Krause, a lot. There is a lot of interesting stuff in that book. It gives you the alternative calenders, not everybody adheres to the Ad format, and any coin from an Arab country will be showing a year very different from 2014, if minted today. Krause also has a very helpful section on countries, and areas logos so you can identify where the coin is from by matching up the reverse design. Often some form of animal, typically a lion. When Krause fails you can then Google the legends and that will often be helpful. In truth the time I spend identifying coins is never functional from a financial point of view; but there is something very satisfying about finding out, where that mysterious coin is from. And if it should be valuable, that is a bonus.
