Good morning all! Weve received a number of inquiries about fires visible around Fanny Bay and Cumberland on Vancouver Island. The fire south of Fanny Bay is in the Cook Creek area. It is at a very high elevation (about 1000 meters above sea level) and is burning in an open logged area in slash. The fire is on private land, not crown land, and is being responded to by the owner. The Wildfire Management Branch is providing some expertise in tactics and strategies to deal with this fire. It’s estimated at 20-30 hectares in size, and is burning on the top part of a knoll of the mountain. The fire is not threatening the forest at this time, and is burning in an open cut block consuming the dry slash and fuels. The fire cause of this fire is under investigation. Due to yesterday’s high winds, smoke from this fire moved over the Beaufort mountain range and into the Port Alberni area. We have been notified of a fire within the Cumberland Fire Department’s jurisdiction on private forested land, that they and a local forest company have responded. Wildfire Management Branch has provided some expertise in strategy and tactics. The fire has been reported at 20 hectares in size, and at this point is burning in slash.
