Today in 1945, the American B-29 bomber "Enola Gay" dropped a four-tonne atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, killing an estimated 140,000 people and destroying 50,000 buildings in what marked the beginning of the nuclear era. Also today in 1939, regular air-mail service was inaugurated between Canada and Britain and in 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov became the first man to orbit the Earth more than once when he made 17 orbits in "Vostok 2."
