Good morning everyone this is an article that I have written that can be found on my website at kcfmonline.org. It is about Halloween and I hope that it is informative and that you enjoy it!! God bless!! It is called Trick or Treat. October is here and at this time of year the fall season is in full swing. Most of the world will celebrate Halloween but what do we do as Christians with this holiday. Halloween is a holiday that did not originate by God and was started as a tradition by people outside of the Christian faith. Most people today do not know this but this holiday originated centuries ago when people would summon the souls of the dead to revisit the homes of family and friends. It is a day that the devil deceives many into invoking all kinds of occult practices but we as Christians are not to be fooled. The word occult means the hidden and often times the occult does things in the public eye that is hidden from those who do not understand the meaning. Sounds like someone you know? The Bible tells us that the devil is the thief that comes to steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10) As Christians, we are not to be ignorant of his devices. There are many myths and stories on how this holiday originated and that is why I wrote this article so as Christian you would not be misinformed. Now I can hear some of you asking, “So if I wear a costume, am I sinning?” Listen, you are under grace and you do not live under the law but you are not to be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Did you know that you are no longer a citizen of the world but a citizen of heaven? Do you think that heaven is celebrating Halloween? Before you make a decision on whether or not you trick or treat let me give you more information about this holiday. The idea of trick or treat in ancient Catholic history, the ghosts of the dead would come to the houses and be met with a banquet of food and at the end of the feast, the people would dress up in masks and costumes would chase the ghosts away to the outskirts of the town. If that sounds ridiculous already, hold on there is more. Halloween is thought by many to be a night where evil spirits would roam freely and they would play tricks on people by wearing costumes. This holiday allowed for communication to evil spirits and people would do all kind of animal sacrifices to acquire the strength of the sacrificed animal. All of this sounds very weird but this is what some people do on this holiday. It is more than a costumed holiday party. My advice to you is to always learn the reason behind why you celebrate something and not do it out of tradition. Remember it is tradition that makes the word of God to no effect. (Mark 7:13) The Bible tells us that we are not to observe particular days, seasons and years as the world does. (Gal. 4:10) Why? Is it because God is a party pooper who does not know how to have a good time? No!! Remember we are called to be different and be separated. All things may be lawful to us but they may not be to our advantage as children of God. So on this Halloween, do your own research and maybe use this year as a soul winning tool to evangelize the neighborhood when someone knocks on the door instead of giving them candy alone. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and remember the traditions you start today will be the things your children will do in the future. There are alternatives that we have available as Christians. Many churches will have a Halleluiah day to celebrate Christ instead of Halloween. Be sure to research in the area where you live to see what churches will have these types of functions and allow you and your family to have new traditions that glorify God and not the devil. God has called us to enjoy life and not to ever compromise our faith in Him as a Christian.
