Good morning facebook friends, supporters, and citizens of Scotland County. On May 10, 2014 I asked those that were in attendance at the “Campaign Kick-Off” to refrain from debates with individuals or groups on my Candidacy for Sheriff. . I asked each of you to allow the debate to be between myself and the current Sheriff. I explained that debates, such as the one I witnessed on Saturday, August 9, 2014, serves no purpose but to cause division and discord. Inappropriate comments were made on both sides and as a result what was supposed to be a debate soon turned into mudslinging. My vision for the Sheriff Department and Scotland County is to bring unity not division. I truly appreciate all of the support, however, we must stay focused on the goals that I have posted on facebook and my website and not get trapped into such worthless discussions. If I can refrain from such nonsense than you can too. It must stop today! Now, let me say this. A comment was made that “anyone can be a sheriff deputy”. Friends, this is what happens when you allow yourself to be pulled into a debate, things get heated, and you speak before you think. When I read this comment I was hurt and disappointed. I cannot imagine how those who work in other departments could have felt, not just them, but also their families. Let it be known that this is not how I feel! Friends, I am a retired 30 year law enforcement officer, not state trooper. Every person who has the desire and seeks to become a law enforcement officer must meet the same state requirements. Yes, we may work for different departments, wear different uniforms, and attend different locations for training. It does not matter, when it is all said and done “WE” still have to be certified by the same state laws and we are all sworn law enforcement officers. In Closing, We are a brotherhood of public servants, working beside each other, and took the oath On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the constitution, my community, and the agency, I serve. Ralph Kersey for Sheriff
