Once upon a time, there was a job opening for a project manager at a small tech company. The job description was very thorough and used all the right searchable words. “Blah, blah, blah….minimum 5-years experience”. “Blah, blah, blah….team player, excellent communication skills.” “Blah, blah…meet deadlines and manage budgets ….” The company received over 300 resumes online and after wading through them, selected 5 candidates to interview. After countless group interviews, phone screenings and five assessments they eventually made an offer to a project manager who accepted the position. The project manager stayed for 7 months. The entire hiring process took four months. The cost was never documented but when the time and lost productivity are calculated the dollar amount was well into the thousands. I’m telling you this story because I was the project manager. I quit because the job was intolerable and I was miserable. Before you “unfriend” me on Facebook, let me tell you the lessons learned from this fiasco: 1. Everybody’s on their best behavior during the job interview process. Neither side sees the warts. 2. Nobody really knows what they are doing because they don’t know what they really need. 3. Neither the interviewers nor candidates know the right questions to ask. 4. The hiring process is a crapshoot. This experience happened over 30 years ago and yet I think about it everyday. In hindsight, I would have asked more questions about corporate culture, management styles, and the silos that I didn’t even know existed. From a company standpoint, I firmly believe that employers don’t look at the whole picture and take the time to map out how each employee impacts the bottom line. The strategic approach gets lost because the tactical needs. Does any part of this story sound familiar to you? If so, you’re not alone. There has to be a better way to find and hire the right people. This story has a happy ending….stay tuned… To be continued….. Jan Marino High Gain Companies, Inc.
