Good morning my friends. I guess you’d better grab your umbrella - TopicsExpress

Good morning my friends. I guess you’d better grab your umbrella before you leave home, I hear we are in for some frog-strangling rain today. I remember when I was just a kid hanging around on a hot summer day on the front porch at Grandma Ketchie’s house listening to the older folks talking about how much we needed rain. I can almost smell the fragrant rain as it settled Grandma’s dry, dusty driveway when it finally came. Rain was big news when you were raised on a farm and without enough rain to water the crops; we were in for some serious trouble. Often after a serious round of storms, I remember with great fondness how our dad would pile us into the old Plymouth and drive us out toward Amity Hill and Mt. Ulla to see how much rain they got. It didn’t take too much to entertain us kids, so even a ride in the back seat of the Plymouth was welcomed. I still don’t need much of an excuse to hop in my van and ride out in the country. I guess I inherited that from my daddy and for that I am eternally grateful. I get up pretty early in the morning and once in a while I get to thinking about useless trivia. For instance: did you know that Alabama was the very first state to have 911 emergency calls and they didn’t start that until 1968. Now here is an interesting fact: if you are just getting married and are in a hurry to start a big family, you might consider moving to Nebraska. More triplets are born in Nebraska than any other state. You know, sometimes we are guilty of talking a little disparaging about some of our states and poking a little fun at them. For some reason, West Virginia is often picked on and maybe it’s because it’s known as the Mountain State and everybody is jealous. But, West Virginia had the world’s first brick-paved street. Yep, that’s right; Summers Street was laid in brick in Charleston, West Virginia in 1870. I don’t know if that’ true or not, one would have thought someplace like Boston or Philadelphia would have had brick streets first. Well, since the rain is on its way, I had better head to the gallery before it hits here. Sadly, we have a funeral we will be attending today in the rain. Our good friend, Karen Kistler lost her father, Don Kistler, earlier this week. Don was a good and gentle man and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Karen and her family. I hope you all will be able to stay dry today and don’t forget to get your umbrella. God Bless!!
