Good morning my friends. We did a rare thing yesterday, we skipped - TopicsExpress

Good morning my friends. We did a rare thing yesterday, we skipped going to church. I am not bragging about it and I feel badly about missing the worship service and Sunday school. Vickie and I felt we needed to be alone for a day or so and visit a place where we knew Gigi loved to go with us. I was supposed to usher and I just don’t think I could have gotten through greeting everybody that came through the door asking how Gigi was doing. We drove to Doughton Park, climbed our favorite hill, felt the breeze, took pictures of each other, shed a tear, hugged each other, and remembered Gigi running through the tall grass with her little ears flapping in the wind. We drove down the parkway taking pictures of the beautiful rhododendron blooming at their peak right now. I had been telling Vickie about the great hamburgers at this little grill halfway between Jefferson and Sparta. I had the larger six-ounce freshly made patty of lean ground beef on mine while Vickie opted for the four-ounce one. They were good and juicy and delicious to the last bite and I kept thinking how much Gigi would like to have had a bite of that hamburger. I’m just glad we ate every bit of our burgers and we didn’t have to ask for a doggy bag or I would have lost it right there at the Copper Mine Grill. Vickie fixed us some ham steak, corn-on-the-cob, and green peas for supper. While I was eating the ham, I cut off a small piece and reached down to offer it to Gigi without thinking. Vickie saw my faux pas and said, “She’s not there anymore, Cotton.” That was all I needed to set the fountain of tears flowing again. I always stop at the Hess/Wilco station at exit 85 on I-77 to fill up with gas. I don’t know how they do it, but they are fifteen to twenty cents a gallon cheaper than anywhere around here. Gas was $3.45 yesterday there and for some reason, I felt as If I was getting a deal. Did I say deal…at $3.45 a gallon…what has happened to our way of thinking that we are now convinced that those exorbitant prices are a bargain? When I was a teenager, I pumped gas at Carl Harkey’s service station for $.13 cents a gallon during a huge gas war. He made less that one penny a gallon profit, but we sold a heck of a lot of gas. Today, the tax alone in North Carolina is $.44 cents a gallon and we wonder what they are doing with all that revenue…the roads are in terrible shape. Anyway, on the way home, we stopped by the little school on the Troutman Historic Property and took photographs of the little American flags Curtis Fortner had placed in and around the revered cemetery nearby. I sent a beautiful one into WBTV in hopes they would show it this morning, but Al Conklin was not on air today and his replacement rarely seems inclined to show the pictures viewers send in. I hope you all have a wonderful day today with family and friends. Today is our son-in-law, Dr. Chuck LaRusso’s birthday and I hope his day is good. It is also his twin brother, Larry’s birthday, too…they seem to have the same birthday every year. We look forward to spending some time with Stephen and Teena today for some hugs and healing laughter. Don’t forget to say your prayers and be sure to remember all the veterans and thank them for their service. God Bless!!
