Good morning my friends. Well, there is finally some light at the window-decorating tunnel…just a pair of Santa’s boots, his toy sack, and a couple more strings of toy garland and Santa’s Toy Shop will be complete. Be sure to drop by and take a gander at the new window display that the ladies of Landmark Galleries have worked so hard on for the last four days. The window was made to depict a scene for our new children’s book, “The Perfect Christmas Eve. I hope you all enjoy it. Thursday nights are usually my night to watch PBS which consists of North Carolina Now, Our State, and Exploring North Carolina. Well there I am all snug in my bed with my Jack Reacher novel waiting for Our State to come on at 8:00 and much to my consternation a picture of politician appeared on the screen and thankfully forewarned me of the impending telecast. Since I had eaten practically a whole pizza, I thought it best not to risk an upset stomach, so I turned to Turner Classic Movies. Well, guess what was on? The Birds!! I think The Birds is one of Hitchcock’s best. I remember taking my daughter to the Outer Banks one year when she was pretty young and we watched The Birds on TV the night we got there to Atlantic Beach. That might have been a mistake because the next day we were riding on a ferry from Cedar Island over to Ocracoke Island and the ubiquitous flock of sea gulls followed us most of the way soaring and diving toward the ferry in hopes of catching a reward that had been tossed in the air by a tourist. When the screeching gulls made a dive toward us, needless to say my daughter was somewhat apprehensive after watching the children getting attacked by Alfred Hitchcock’s Birds. So, without much ado, we sought the safety of our vehicle. I remember another incident at the OBX one time. I was setting in my old ’76 Buick minding my own business and waiting on the ferry to take me to Cedar Island. I had the window rolled down to let in the soft breeze that was coming off the water and eating my usual breakfast of Lance Cheese Crackers. I guess I shouldn’t have been sitting that close to the window’s edge because when I was about to take a delicious bite of the delectable treat; out of the blue a huge and greedy herring gull flew right into my Buick’s window and grabbed that cracker out of my hand and took off. I could have sworn I heard that bird laughing at me as it flew away and it wasn’t even a laughing gull. I have never been a big bird fan ever since a frightening childhood incident. My daddy used to raise pheasants and kept them in a huge walk-in cage that gave the birds some flying-around room. For some reason, I guess it was because I was the dumbest and youngest, that I was assigned the task of gathering eggs. I hated that job, even from our domesticated hens, who took such glee from pecking my hand every time I tried to slide my little hand and under them to retrieve their eggs. Well, going into that big cage where the pheasants were living was another whole story. One day, those hateful birds must have sensed my trepidation because the lead male suddenly, and without provocation, flew on to the top of my head and begin having a field day pecking away. I have never been fond of anything flapping around my head and when that blasted thing started pecking at my eyes and even pecked my eyelid, I started yelling for help. Daddy heard my entreaties and finally came to the rescue and shooed the predator away. I decided then and there, that egg-retrieving was not my chosen profession. To this day, I don’t like being around big birds that have the ability to go into an attack mode at the drop of a hat. Today, some of my favorite foods are fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, chicken salad, grilled chicken, baked chicken, and chicken-pot-pie and let me tell you, I take mush satisfaction each time I take a bite of sweet revenge. The sweetest revenge of all was eating that pheasant for supper. I hope you all have a good day filled with happiness and sunshine. God Bless
