Good short fiction is a bit like charisma: hard to define, but you know it when you see it. For Lorrie Moore, if novels are films, short stories are photographs. For Will Self, a short story is a shard, a sliver, a vignette; for Neil Gaiman, its a tiny window into other worlds, other minds, other dreams; for Paolo Bacigalup, its a hand grenade of ideas. For me, a good short story = emotional caffeine: a short, sharp jolt to the heart.
