So defeat rumors in the following few steps: 1) Ask the rumor donor to back it with evidence. If you did not see it, you did not hear it. Be rest assured it never happened 2) Dont act on it. Facile manipulators only take rumors to weak minds. Weak minds are often those who assume they know it all and therefore rush into perceiving things that are not suported by verifiable facts. 3) Motives; never listen to the gospels of a politician, business rivals, etc. Most are back stab cons who will use the same technigue to misuse and abuse you. 4) Use your own judgement and initiative; dont act on impose, act on verified fact only and disconect relationship (friend, Family etc) in decision making and action time. 5) Beware; you can only be a fool when you allow fools to invade your mind. Freedom of conscience is paramount. Dont revenge for others, ask them to fight their own dirty wars, for they may have already drawn their guns and include in you their crusade without your due permision and readiness.
