(Gordon) The escalating number of attacks at the Kleinfontein Dam has the police considering a number safety measures. The attacks occur along the N12 highway bank of the Kleinfontein Dam, in Tanie Taljaard Park. Some people visit the area to fish, while others go there to relax. There have been more than five attacks reported in the area this year alone, with three taking place this month. The armed thugs steal people’s possessions and disappear into the “jungle”. The latest victims are Crystal Park residents Pastor Robbie Scheepers, his son and wife. Scheepers went to ride a quad bike in the area, on Sunday, April 13. After offloading the bike from the bakkie, he sat on it and started it. “I could not hear anything and when I looked up I saw five guys standing in front of me,” said Scheepers. They were armed with knives, while another man, armed with a firearm, was standing guard. The thugs held a knife to his throat while they searched him and his family. They stole two cellphones, his wallet and a bank card. “They also took my car keys, which will now cost R15 000 to replace,” said Scheepers. The family was left traumatised by the attack, which resulted in his wife being hospitalised. “My son also needed to consult a psychologist,” Scheepers said. They family is now scared of everything and the terrified Scheepers is now carrying a gun. Scheepers asked why there are no signs warning people of the imminent danger in the area, and said he is even considering providing one from his own pocket. Although several safety measures are being contemplated by the Benoni police, spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the SAPS’s position is that residents should avoid the area completely. “The area is isolated and very dangerous,” she said. Sekele added that the police will, however, patrol the area every hour or so and plan to rope in the EMPD for help. “Station commander Brig Poobalan Subbiah is also planning to engage the Ekurhuleni Metro, to see what action can be taken, including erecting warning signs in the area,” she said.
