Gordon Willis, cinematographer, RIP. One of the subtly ingenious choices Willis made on ANNIE HALL was to shoot it in the same style he shot THE GODFATHER (see the notes on image one) which wasnt how comedies were usually photographed. Usually comedies were done in bright, appealing colors with fully lit sets that kept them light and fun – see any Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Mike Nichols, or earlier Woody comedy from the same period. Allen and Willis wanted to remove the artificial happy feel that creates because ANNIE HALL is a comedy with more emotional life than that. ANNIE HALL looks like no other comedy, except those that imitate it. Maybe HAROLD & MAUDE has this quality? But if it does, imo its because Hal Ashby worked with Willis on THE LANDLORD.
