Gospel for September 30, 2014, Tuesday Ps 88:2–3, 4–5, 6, 7–8 Let my prayer come before you, Lord. 1st Reading: Job 3:1–3, 11–17, 20–23 Gospel: Lk 9:51–56 As the time drew near when Jesus would be taken up to heaven, he made up his mind to go to Jerusalem. He sent ahead of him some messengers, who entered a Samaritan village to prepare a lodging for him. But the people would not receive him, because he was on his way to Jerusalem. Seeing this, James and John, his disciples, said, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to reduce them to ashes?” Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they went on to another village. REFLECTION There is now a sense of urgency in the movements of Jesus. His time is drawing near. There is so much to be done yet. Time is of the essence. It is in this moment of preparation when things sometimes don’t get on in the way we want it. Jesus wants to be near Jerusalem so He sent His people to prepare lodging for Him nearby, in a Samaritan town. But people would not welcome Him. They did this to all Jews who wanted to go to Jerusalem during the Feast. Jesus was not singled out. He was just one among the many casualties of the enmity between the Jews and the Samaritans. If Jesus was made of lesser stuff He would have given in to the tempting course of action proposed by the impulsive James and John. How about us in similar situations? Do our emotions get the better of us?
