Got a question about steel cased ammo today. Is it bad? Seems - TopicsExpress

Got a question about steel cased ammo today. Is it bad? Seems like there are a lot of misconceptions out there. Answer is: Depends on the gun. When I shoot AKs all Id run is steel cased becasuse Wolf is cheap and your AK doesnt care. It wont damage your extractor or the guns internals like some gun shop commandos say it will. Out of an AK it runs fine, and Ive never seen any QAQC issues out of Wolf or some of the others I havent seen out of PMC, Federal etc. Out of an AR15? No way Id waste the money on steel cased. Reason isnt that it will hurt the gun, reason is youll be banging stuck casings out of the chamber every few rounds with a cleaning rod. Ive heard a few theories as to why this seems to always happen with steel case in ARs - everything from the increased expansion of steel under heat swelling the casing to the polymer/resin that coats the case gumming up the chamber. Ive never noticed any goop in the chamber post range cleaning, so Im inclined to believe the former. All I know for certain is it happens with ARs when they warm up. A lot. Even with my piston AR that doesnt run as hot a chamber as a gas impingement gun. Dont know why, and I dont care. I just buy brass cased for 223/556. As to battle rifles and whatnot, havent run it much to have a scientific opinion. Same goes for the new crop of ARs that are running 7.62x39 or 5.45. I dont have an opinion based on experience, but I intend to get one of these so Ill keep you posted. If you have experience, drop your review into the comments. As for corrosiveness of the ammo, this stuff isnt battery acid but it long term it can eat up the chrome lining of a barrel. To prevent this, clean your gun after the range. You should be doing that anyway. Out of pistols, my Glocks eat steel case and ask for seconds. Most pistols will. Maybe not your picky custom 1911, but your Glock 17 doesnt care. Hope this helped. Go buy an AK and a case of Wolf if you want to shoot on the cheap!
