Gotta love Texas! Last night, about 100 folks turned out for the reading at Book People -- surely one of the countrys best bookstores. Here I am with Evan Taniguchi, the son of Alan Taniguchi, who 42 years ago while he was dean of the architecture department at the University of Texas and I was a student, first told me about the camp in Crystal City. Evan is a well-known architect in Austin with many friends and he brought a bunch of them with him last night. I signed many books in honor of Alan Taniguchi. Some of my pals from Texas Monthly came as well, including Brian Sweany, our current editor who introduced me. I was happy to meet several people who grew up in Crystal City during the years that the camp was opened, 1942 to 1948. Some of them had fathers that worked in the internment camp and these children remember what an economic boom the camp was to the tiny town, and they also remember how strange it was as Texas-born children to see so many children of multiple nationalities: Japanese, German, Italian. On the wings of American airlines to Seattle! Next stop: Elliott Bay Book Company.
