Govan Law Centre was recently asked to intervene on an emergency - TopicsExpress

Govan Law Centre was recently asked to intervene on an emergency basis in a case in Pollok where a tenant had been evicted. This case has had a lot of discussion on social media. The case that was brought to our attention had significant rent arrears with approximately 25% of which was related to the bedroom tax. Our client had been evicted prior to knowledge about the eviction taking place. A catalogue of errors culminated in this family going through the eviction process, with no one aspect of the case taking precedence over the other. Glasgow Housing Association carried out a legal eviction of that there is no doubt at all. This was not a bedroom tax case as is being described in some quarters. Like most evictions there is a complex variety of issues which culminated in our client being evicted. Glasgow Housing Association listened to the case made by Govan Law Centre and our client and decided to let our client return to their home. Glasgow Housing Association did not legally have to do this but our client was willing to engage with her landlord which changed GHA decision. GHA must be commended for this. Our client had been unable to engage up until this point for reasons which will remain private. This situation has now been resolved and our client is thankful for the help received but would now wish to be left alone. We would request on our clients behalf that all information about our client is removed from posts on social media websites, particularly our clients address, name and pictures/vidoes of our clients house. Where we appreciate that community groups were active in this response, we would ask that our clients privacy is respected. We appreciate that this information was posted with the best intentions but now that the issue has been resolved to our clients satisfaction, that this information is now removed from the public eye. To this end we would like to draw a conclusion to this case in terms of our clients situation being discussed in public. There are many ways through which this situation could have been avoided. We would like to take this time to state that should a tenant feel they are unable to engage with their landlord, a tenant can use an outside agency such as Govan Law Centre, Shelter, Legal Services Agency or Citizens Advice to support them. The past few days have shown how crucial it is that tenants seek their own independent support if they feel they cannot work with their landlords.
