Governor Adams Oshiomhole declares Fixed charge illegal and asked BEDC to desist from collecting it Sequel to the petition and the eight days protest of Edo State Civil Society Organizations regarding the fraudulent extortion of the people by Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), the Comrade Governor met with Edo state Civil Society Organizations led by Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin and officials of BEDC led by Funke Osibodu on the 31st of March, 2014 in Government House to resolve the conflict between the Civil Society and BEDC. Comarde Kaduna Eboigbodin and Pastor Leo Olu martins defended our petition intoto . Funke Osibodu as usual shifted the blame on Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC) and admitted the epileptic power supply. Also present was the Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief Edebiri who commended the Civil Society for championing the fight on behalf of the talakawa and frowned at the high level of extortion perpetuated by BEDC.He cited his case with BEDC as a case study where he was asked to pay #74,000 for service not rendered and also said he pay for one meter twice before he was finally given through the back door on the payment of another #60,000. This is injustice. The Comrade Governor lamented the poor power supply and wondered why BEDC will continue to reap where they didnt sow and said the essence of Government is to ensure the improvement of the lives of the people not to subject them to hardship. He cited Mohammed Buazizi as a case study of what is now called the Arab Spring The Governor called on BEDC to discontinue the collection of the monthly fixed charge and declare it illegal.He advised BEDC to invite officials of NERC to a public meeting with the Electricity Consumers in Edo State to defend their illegality in the public court.We say caboodle rejectamenta to estimated bill cum fixed charge
