Govt School functions from a single rented room at Bhaderwah BHADARWAH September 30: Mocking at the tall claims of the state government about upgradation of infrastructure of the educational institutions in rural areas, the Primary School at Dehraja ,Bhaderwah is still functioning from a single rented room. According to the locals, the school was established in the year 1990 and since then it was functioning from a 6x10 feet room. “As many as 30 children are studying in the educational institution,” the locals said adding the children could be seen cramming for space inside the room. “Majority of the people living in the village are farmers who are unable to make their ends meet. For this reason, they cannot afford to admit their children in privately run schools and thus enroll them in this primary educational institution,” the locals said. According to Abdul Kabir Malik a local social activist, the Primary School was set up by the Government under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) as a centre for children who did not have proper schooling. “Despite the claims of government about the massive infrastructure upgradation in education sector, our school has been ignored,” he said.“We have many a times apprised the senior functionaries in the Directorate of School Education jammu and the district administration about the problems faced by the student due to the paucity of space and also sought construction of a new structure, but the officials turned deaf ears to our repeated pleas,” the locals added. “During the onset of winter, parents refuse to send their wards to school as the room does not have adequate heating facilities,” Sarpanch of the village told . “Also, the Mid Day Meal scheme is not implemented properly during these seasons”. The Primary School at Dehraja village is not the only one functioning from a rented accommodation. According to reports, around 4830 educational institutions across the state are without buildings. The startling figures have come to fore in the latest Economic Survey tabled by the government in the Legislative Assembly in 2011.The survey says that 4119 primary schools, 628 middle schools, 76 high schools and seven higher secondary schools are without buildings and are being run from rented buildings or by internal arrangement. Apart from this, 984 upgraded institutions are deficient in accommodation, which include 611 high schools and 373 higher secondary schools.Figures further reveal that 474 primary school buildings are in dilapidated condition with 28 upper middle schools without any building at all, while 52 primary institutions lack drinking water and toilet facility. Not only this ZEO office Bhaderwah is also functional from a rented building from the day of establishment and it is shame on the part of the govt .
