Graffiti in the desert waiting to be recorded – the OCIANA Research Project On the Arabian Peninsula, literacy was widespread from the 1st millennium BC to the 4th century AD, and both the settled and nomadic populations have left us tens of thousands of inscriptions and graffiti. There are thousands more in the deserts of Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia waiting to be studied. The OCIANA project (directed by Professor Jeremy Johns and Michael Macdonald) will create an online Corpus of the inscriptions of north and central Arabia. You can check out a preliminary demonstration site on ociana.org.uk. The (I think beautiful) acronym OCIANA stands for Online Corpus of the Inscriptions of Ancient North Arabia.
