Graffiti is temporary. The Internet is forever (Ellen Gamerman, Wallstreetjournal, 2014) This is the premise of the Google Cultural Institutes latest project - The Street Art Project. Street art has become something of a catchall term for a diverse range of activities and art practices, including graffiti, stencils, hand-painted posters, paste-ups, stickers, street intervention pieces, installations and zines. Street art today functions as an elaborate national and international communication system and is currently morphing into its next phase in which the ephemeral has become the collectable. Launched last week, The Street Art Project is integrated with Google Maps and seeks to be a repository of images of art found on walls, buildings and assorted surfaces around the world - providing a long-term record of works that are typically ephemeral. It covers spray-painted murals that play tricks on the eye, politically charged installations, candy-coloured art on highway underpasses, crochet-covered cars and sticker-covered windows. The National Gallery of Australia are excited by The Street Art Project, and look forward to watching it develop, especially Australias presence as we know there is a rich street art scene here.
