Grain Valley wouldn’t be denied. The Eagles scored the final two touchdowns in rallying for a 23-17 victory over visiting St. Joseph Benton Friday night and even their record at 1-1. Grain Valley tied the score 17-17 on Brice Quinn’s 46-yard, third-quarter run and Evan Velasquez’s extra point. Then in the fourth quarter, Kellen Holland passed 59 yards to Hunter Ramirez for the game-winning touchdown. The Eagle victory snapped a seven-game losing streak and avenged last year’s 13-12 loss to Benton. “The defense played real well,” Grain Valley coach Jimmy Tucker said. “They scored 42 points on Ozark last week. We did a good job on a very good running back. “It was good to get the first win. The kids worked hard. The defense got a lot better, and we made enough plays to win the game.” Grain Valley went to the air for the victory. Ben Andes was 5 of 8 for 115 yards, and Holland 6 of 11 for 129 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles were held to 41 yards rushing. Velasquez kicked a 27-yard field goal, and Holland passed 30 yards to Velasquez to account for Grain Valley’s 10 first-half points. Then, the defense took over by holding Benton scoreless in the second half. Read more: examiner.net/article/20130907/SPORTS/130909120/2000/NEWS#ixzz2eQ33oYyO
