☆Grammy Mildreds Flashbacks - Sundays☆ Our Sundays started off with the smell of bacon, eggs, grits and her favorite faux coffee Sanka mixed with the smell of some strong Avon perfume. She walked around the house with her slip and knee highs she claimed no one would notice because her dress would cover that secret. She slips on her heels and had me zip her dress up in the back. Mid-zip I said, Uh uh, you gonna look like a sausage.....dress is too tight and it wont go up any higher!, She immediately comes back with, Lawd Hammercy, you always puttin on!....she hollers, NEB (granddad).....see about zipping this dress up, Im runnin behind! He tugs and pulls and finally got the dress zipped. She put on her lip rouge and rubbed some on her cheeks and we were on our way. One thing you could count on was my Grammy, Aunt Mill to many, to get church crunk. Every Sunday I would sit between my mom and her...and every Sunday I was nervous (You will understand later). You see, Gram loved the Lord and there was not a moment she wasnt afraid to show it. If you ever went to church with her she was known to talk, ask questions or comment during Morning Announcements. Example [Announcer] Miss Jenkins had a second stroke and is recovering at Presbyterian Hospital. [Grammy] Lawd Hammercy! I just took a plate to her last week and she was doing good!! [Announcer] The funeral for Mr. Johnson will be Wednesday. [Grammy] Thats why you gots to get right with God cause you neva know!! She hollers out, Thank Ya Jesuuus!..She begins stomping, making a beat with her heels...getting her soul ready to start singing a spiritual. Interupting the announcements, she started singing in her raspy voice, Trouble in my way....I have to cry sometimes....Trouble in my way..I have to cry sometimes....I laid awake at night....But thats alright....Jesus, he will fix it...After while. Me, I practiced my duck and move the night before so I wouldnt get hit when she started shouting. She stands up, the announcer sits down. I can still see her skinny legs jumping up and running in place and can remember watching her knee-highs fall to her ankles and church members tag teaming trying to fan and calm her. By this time, the whole church picked up where she left off in the song. Funny then but I know how she felt now. Cant wait to hear her sang her song and watch them skinny legs do that holy dance. ♡
