Grammy award-winning South African choir comes to WAC as part of 10x10 Walton Arts Center is excited to welcome Soweto Gospel Choir on Thursday, March 6 at 7:30pm as part of the 10x10 Arts Series. Soweto Gospel Choir is a 24-member Grammy award-winning choir from South Africa that was formed in November 2002. Their first album was recorded in December 2002, and within just three weeks, the choir reached the number one spot on Billboard’s World Music Chart. In 2003, they won an American Gospel Music Award for “Best Choir” and for “Best International Choir.” In February 2007, Soweto Gospel Choir won a Grammy Award for their second album “Blessed,” and the following year, they won a second Grammy Award for their third album “African Spirit.” Soweto Gospel Choir has made appearances on NBC’s Today Show, as well as Late Night with Conan O’Brien. They have also performed for former President Bill Clinton in Little Rock, Ark. and were invited to perform at Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s 75th birthday celebration. Additionally, audiences who have seen the Pixar hit Wall-E are probably familiar with “Down to Earth” — a song that Soweto Gospel Choir collaborated with singer Peter Gabriel on — and which went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Movie Song. Along with their numerous awards and appearances, Soweto Gospel Choir founded its own AIDS orphans foundation called Nkosi’s Haven Vukani in 2003. This foundation is intended to assist other organizations and families that receive little or no government funding and to raise international awareness about children orphaned after losing their parents to AIDS.
