Granddaughter murdered Granny for lavish lifestyle and money Bangalore, June 08: On May 10, when a 72-year-old home-alone woman was murdered at Binnypet here, the police had suspected that it was yet another routine case of murder for gain She was murdered by her granddaughter who is just 19. Harshitha, the grand daughter, a high school dropout, made her mind up to throw a party for her buddies at an expensive restaurant in Bangalore just to show that she belonged to a rich family, without realizing that she would end up behind the bars. Harshitha, the suspect not only allegedly killed her grandmother Ramarathnamma, 75, and walked away with the gold jewellery, the same evening she partied with her friends and spent Rs. 50,000. Almost a month after committing the crime, the Bangalore police arrested her on Wednesday. The murder took place on May 10 in J. J. Nagar when Harshitha’s parents were away. Due to a spate of murders of lonely elderly women in Bangalore recently, the police suspected the role of an organised gang. But Harshita’s lavish lifestyle aroused police suspicion. Hereafter, they took her into custody on June 2 and questioned her. During the interrogation, Harshitha, she confessed to her crime. During the interrogation, Harshitha described the murder. On May 10, she returned from office around 3 pm, when she knew that her father Shekhar (45), a sales executive, mother Lakshmi (38), a domestic help, and sister Varshitha (21) still be at work. Her granny, who had come from Mysore on May 8, was engaged in washing clothes. The old woman had in her possession Rs 14 lakh cash and ornaments. Harshitha,who was knowledgeable about the valuables, demanded money and ornaments. When her grandmother refused, the police said, she hit the elderly woman with a rolling pin before strangulating her with wet clothes. Ramaratnamma collapsed. Harshitha lost no time in snatching gold chains and bangles. She pawned the valuables and collected Rs 1.29 lakh to start a new lifestyle, the police said. The case took a different turn with the suicide attempt, when her parents and elder sister attempted suicide by consuming insecticide at a hotel in Shimoga. Fortunately, the hotel staff gets involved and took the trio to a hospital.
