Grateful to have such a wonderful co-worker. Tinas been nominated for both outstanding journalist and outstanding photographer (shes won both in the past) in addition to several other categories in the Newspapers Atlantic Better Newspapers Competition. She is a treasured friend who continually inspires, teaches me and makes me laugh, and we all know what a gift a person like that is. Status Update By Tina Comeau Surette So in addition to our newspaper and newsroom staff already having won 6 CCNA national journalism awards and a blue ribbon (announced last week) the Yarmouth Vanguard has also received 7 standing finalist nominations in various categories of the Newspapers Atlantic Better Newspapers Competition. This competition covers community newspapers in the four Atlantic provinces and is for work published in 2013. I am a finalist in both the outstanding journalist and the outstanding photographer category. I won both of these categories in 2009 and was nominated again for both in 2011, so its quite an honour, and humbling, to be a finalist in both categories once again. My editor Fred Hatfield is a finalist in the Outstanding Photographer Award category, a category he won in 2012. Since the introduction of these two categories in this competition in 2009, members of our Vanguard newsroom have been nominated 13 times. Other nominees have included Carla Allen (who won outstanding journalist in 2012), Belle Hatfield and former Vanguard reporter Michael Gorman. Were also a finalist in the best feature series category for my fisheries series Rough Waters that ran last year and Fred is a finalist for best sports photo for a picture he took at a Yarmouth Mariners game. It was a cool photo. Colin Campbell was celebrating a goal while the player from the other team was rolling his eyes. LOL The Vanguard is a finalist for best community service for its support and work surrounding All Hands on Deck, the Georgetown Conference and a community survey. Were also a finalist for best Christmas issue. The winners will be announced in late May. Many of our TC•Media papers and staffers are finalists as well. Good job everyone.
