Gratitude -- Thursday, June 5th 1. For running into my daughters first grade teacher at our elementary school yesterday. A brief lovefest ensued about my not-so-little-anymore-since-she-starts-seventh-grade-in-the-fall-middle-school-girl. Mrs. B -- her former teacher -- clutched my arm to thank me again for the note I had written to the principal at the end of that wonderful year on her behalf, and which she had just come across again while cleaning out her classroom. I welled up just a little, and reminded her that she taught my little girl how to read, and that my voracious bookworm just finished reading The Pearl this year. Her hand flew to her mouth. And then she clutched my arm again, smiling. Im so grateful for teachers, and for every blessed chance to thank them for all that they do. We need to respect and support the bejesus out of teachers. We need to trust their instincts and be their allies. We need to honor the special place that they hold in our childrens lives, and in ours. It stuns me that some of us cant remember what we ate for lunch on Tuesday, but we never forget the names of the teachers who taught us how to write our names in script, who somehow helped us limp to the finish line of sophomore year geometry, or who helped us find our voices -- in literary essays and dramatic monologues and in the very stuff of childhood and adolescence. Mrs. Quinn, Mrs. Walewski, Mrs. Rampolla, Mr. Potok, Mrs. Arneth, Mr. Sutich, Mr. Spinelli, Mr. Cox, and Mrs. Joan Voss -- thank you. 2. For a midday text from my husband. Because Im nicer to think about than work. 3. For my sons glee at receiving an early birthday greeting from -- wait for it -- his dentist. A birthday card from my dentist? he exclaimed. Boy -- you never know what youre gonna get in life. No truer words, son.
