Gratitude Day #15: For this.... Parker J. Palmer shared a link. Im fascinated by the way words that come from a place of love and truth can create a life-giving connection between strangers who will never meet face-to-face. Thats the joy of writing for me, watching words become connective tissue that lives between us. Im also fascinated by the way people who know each other can connect in silence at times when no words can be said or heard—as when we are separated by distance, ill health, or death. Years ago, I wrote a poem about all this. When I showed it to my friend and colleague Carrie Newcomer, a gifted singer-songwriter, she set it to music. You can read the poem below, then listen to Carries lovely rendition of it. Two Toasts first appeared on her 2008 album, A Geography of Light, and again on her 2012 album, Kindred Spirits: A Collection. P.S. Carries newest album, A Permeable Life, is gorgeous. You can check it out at tiny.cc/7secpx. While youre there, check out her book of the same title at tiny.cc/suecpx, a superb collection of poems and essays. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TWO TOASTS To Words and How They Live Between Us... Praise be that this thin mark, this sound Can form the word that takes on flesh To enter where no flesh can go To fill each other’s emptiness. To Us and How We Live Between the Words... And in between the sound of words I hear your silent, sounding soul Where One abides in solitude Who keeps us one when speech shall go. —Parker J. Palmer
