Gratitude, day 3: 1. Im grateful for the helpers. Today, the 13th anniversary of 9/11, is as good a time as any to remember that while the world is full of unimaginable violence, its also full of people who are willing to sacrifice everything, even their one precious life, to help others. 2. Im grateful for literature. In the spirit of the first item on the list, here is Anne Frank, saying it better than I ever could: In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again. 3. Im grateful for all the children I know, who remind me every day that some of us are brand new here. The things that perplex them about the world often perplex me, but seeing the world through their eyes always makes me want to improve it, if I can, or explain it, if I cant. And when I cant even do that, its always helpful to have someone around who will tell you a good fart joke when youre feeling blue. (Oz and Luci, this includes you, but as the beloved heirs of the vast Hubley fortune, you will get your own items on my list, very soon.)
