Gratitude day #6 Today I am grateful for music. I was just four years old when my parents bought me the little piano pictured. It was tiny, but it played. I was playing simple Christmas songs by ear, and that was the only music we had that Christmas season. Yes. I still have it upstairs. I have pictured it with Mr. Eddie, who is an 8-lb Yorkie. I continued to play, and developed the talent I had been given to play by ear. I was even playing in Saturday morning Primary, because it was hard to get women to come out on a Saturday. I played the simple songs I knew. My dad owned his own refrigeration/air conditioning repair business. Once, while on a service call, he heard the lady of the house playing and giving lessons to students. He asked her about me taking lessons. She said yes, and wanted to know if I had a piano. On my 8th birthday, I heard someone pull in the driveway. Again, while on a service call to church members in Danville (small town nearby), the woman mentioned she was selling her piano. Her mother was sending her the grand piano she had grown up playing. Dad made arrangements to pay $50/month for six months. When it was rolled in, I was ecstatic! My own piano!!! I still own it. It sits in my living room as a reminder of the great blessing it has been in my life. All of my children learned to play on it. The lessons began at 8 years old. They were $1/week, and when they were raised to $1.25/week, we nearly had to give them up. After a few years, when they reached $1.50/week, my parents were sacrificing mightily. Many weeks, we were scraping it up by digging through couch cushions, coat pockets, and car seats. Music has indeed been a blessing in my life, and I have tried to bless others through it, as well. I would be hard-pressed to remember the number of church meetings, baptisms, weddings and funerals I have played for. One of my dearest memories is that of our family gathered around the piano at night singing songs and breaking into harmonies. It was pure heaven. I am grateful for music. And, Im grateful for my parents for providing the opportunity to develop this God-given talent.
