Great Lakes & Upper South in the News: Be a Tourist in Your Own Town: Nearly 80 area attractions to explore from the Lansing State Journal While $1 doesn’t go very far these days, on Saturday it can take you all over the Lansing area to sample local attractions, one-of-a-kind tours, and area hot spots. This is the 20-year anniversary of “Be A Tourist In Your Own Town.” The event was created in 1994 by the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau to showcase Greater Lansing’s attractions to local residents. “The event is the biggest and best we’ve had to date, and we’ve got almost 80 attractions,” said Tracy Padot, vice president, marketing communications at the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau. Padot says they are hoping for good weather and are expecting more than 15,000 “tourists.” So if you’re looking for an adventure, hop aboard one of CATA’s four “Be A Tourist” public bus routes and “get your tour on.” Among the new attractions this year: Red Cedar Spirits is offering tours of their distillery and Le Chat Gourmet Culinary Arts will be doing cooking demonstrations. Zap Zone! on the west side of town has joined in, as well as the Board of Water & Light Depot in REO Town. Want to check out an old favorite? Experience a “Moment in Wine!” at Burgdorf’s Winery, celebrate International Migratory Bird Day and see baby birds hatching at Potter Park Zoo, create and challenge your understanding of science at Impression 5 Science Center, and try your hand at different survival techniques at the Michigan Historical Museum. Throughout the month of June, “tourists” can have their passport stamped at participating attractions but can get into the attractions (free) with the passport the day of the event only. They must pay full admission price for the remainder of the month. Once they receive 10 stamps, they are eligible to enter a prize drawing for overnight stays, gift certificates to local restaurants and more.
