Great article... I never knew that. There was a day when you could do anything without a degree. My Grandfather had two years at the University of Illinois but no degree. He ran a chain for a survey crew in Florida in the Twenties. His boss, an engineer took a liking to him and schooled him every night at the hotel where they were based. After a couple of years, he took the Civil Engineering Exam in Florida and was licensed as a Civil Engineer. He designed runways for the Army Air Force during World War Two. In the Sixties and Seventies he was the Senior Consulting Engineer on the Pan American Highway in Guatemala, Colombia and Ecuador. He built Bridges in Malawi and a railroad north of the Arctic Circle in Canada. When he retired, his company, TAMS, out of New York, sent him his personnel file. Looking through it, he found that he had a Doctor of Engineering Degree... a complete shock to him. He called his old boss and asked what that was all about. Mr. Tippets simply replied, You needed one for your last job, so we gave it to you!
