Great interview from NPR about how the flu vaccine still offers protection even if it isnt prefect. GREENFIELDBOYCE:... In general, its good to remember that flu can be a deadly disease. Thousands of people die from flu every year. Its especially dangerous for young people under the age of five, as well as older people over 65, plus pregnant women and anyone with an underlying medical condition like heart disease, asthma, diabetes. GARCIA-NAVARRO: So people listening to this might think, all right, if the vaccine isnt going to protect me, then I shouldnt get vaccinated. Should they? GREENFIELDBOYCE: Well, the CDC says you should. And the reason is the vaccine will still offer some protection against the main flu strain. Plus, the vaccine includes other components that offer good protection against other flu strains that are out there causing disease. Basically, the CDC wants everyone over the age of six months to get vaccinated, but in reality, less than half of those people do.
