Great meeting today with new City Manager Charlie McClendon...who self admits to living in the Cove! Topics covered included: -Short Term Goals for the City and Council including Getting our Property Management Plan approved by the state. This means that before the City can sell any of the vacant land it now owns through the OLD Redevelopment Agency they need to have the plan approved by the state. Keep in mind that any money from the sale of the property goes to THE STATE not THE CITY. Once the Property Management Plan is in place then the city can get the land into private owner hands and development can begin again. IMPORTANT: We cant do anything with the land until the state approves the Property Management Plan. Because the State must approve EVERY municipalitys Property Management Plan its taking the state longer than anticipated to get the plans approved. -Economic Development - in order to attract more businesses we need to attract more residences and residents. There are some good signs that more residential properties are in the works. -Working on finalizing street repair and maintenance plans. -Once the damn is completed on the south side of E Palm Canyon theyll finish the work needed to repair the street. -Plans are in the works to hire for one year a Public Relations person to handle things like Social Media, News Releases, Web Pages, etc. This is an important step in giving the City a unified look and voice. -Regarding whether or not to seek a bid from the Sheriffs dept to replace City Police. The City Council would have to direct the City Manager to seek a proposal from the Sheriffs Dept. IMPORTANT: The City Council sets policy and the City Manager and City Staff carry out the policies. So, IF you want something to change you need to talk to the council. -Measure B - Currently the One Point sales tax brings in about $4.5M a year which is about 18% of the Citys total Budget. Losing that amount of money would mean more staff cuts. Anyone who attended should feel free to add or comment on my notes from the meeting. This is not intended to be a full an complete listing of all the issues discussed.
