***** Great moments are born from great opportunities ***** All morning long, Ive been thinking about our exciting football game against the Parkway Panthers last night. I was especially smiling while thinking about our sweet, precious Deuce Caston. Deuce is a good friend and former Bandits (baseball) teammate of Steeles. Weve known him for years. And weve loved him as long as weve known him. Actually, everybody loves Deuce. He has such a sweetness, such a warmth and such a genuineness about him that one cannot help but fall in love with him. He is that kid that you hope succeeds....that you hope has good things happen in his life. Ive just been smiling all morning. I just love our school so much. I love the spirit. I love the kids. I love the families..... and I especially love these fun games! Anyway, this morning, after I got back home from taking the kids to school, I began reading and looking over some of Summers recent school work. This particular assignment is why I love teachers so much. Let me rephrase.....This is why I love the teachers who get it so much. They are the special ones. They are the chosen ones. They are the ones whom I hope and pray my children will get to have as their educator one day. I personally believe that teachers, like preachers, have a special calling....they have the opportunity to affect and inspire children in the most grand and positive way....IF they choose to do so. Now, unfortunately, there are some teachers, whom I dont really care for, who use their power to stifle, complicate and harm the self esteem of some of their students.....but I wont go there. (Just know that I am not a fan, nor do I feel they should be in a position to teach our children.) What I DO want to focus on are the teachers, like Summers, who are teaching children how to write a proper essay, while ALSO teaching them VALUABLE life lessons!! ..Lessons about the power of a dream....the strength of a team....and taking opportunities that will make you beam! (A little Jesse Jackson this morning.) hee! But seriously, I can only imagine the thought process that Summer must have gone through to write this essay centered around the quote: Great moments are born from great opportunities. The students first watched that very inspiring movie, Miracle on Ice, starring Kurt Russell, based on the true story of when our US Mens Hockey team beat the more powerful, more experienced Russian Hockey team back during the 1980 Winter Olympics. This movie and in particular, this quote, (that Mrs. Wolcott had the students concentrate on) inspired our kids to think, imagine, dream and even recall different times in their own lives when they had their own personal Great moment because of an opportunity they chose to seize. I love lessons like this! Last night, after we beat Parkway, in a very exciting, *overtime* football game, our very own Deuce Caston found himself in front of a camera and a sports reporter. You see, our starting Quarterback, Tyler Howard, is injured right now, so Deuce has been going in for him while Tylers shoulder heals. Im an observer by nature and I spotted Tyler, with arm in a sling, on the sidelines and watched him pump his fist with such excitement ANYTIME Deuce did something good. He is a team player and was right there encouraging, cheering and wishing Deuce great success. Absolutely heartwarming. (And we all hope that he has a very speedy recovery and is back out on that football field in no time!) Here are Deuces words when the sports reporter was interviewing him after the game: He said, This is so amazing. Ive been wanting to play all year and I got my chance these last two weeks and I just wanted to do what I could do. You see!! He wanted a chance...an opportunity.....so that he could do what he could do so that he could seize the opportunity and make a difference. AND HE SO DID!!! Take a chance. Recognize your opportunities. And SEIZE THE MOMENT. Everyday. ;-)
