Great racing and thank you to everyone that braved the cold weather... MIKE MAHANEY RECORDS 44TH SOUTHERN TIER MODIFIED 100 VICTORY WORTH OVER $6,200. WITH VICTORY MAHANEY BECOMES FIRST FATHER AND SON TO WIN THE SOUTHERN TIER 100. KIRKWOOD, NY…Mike Mahaney led 97 laps to win the 44th Southern Tier 100 at Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday night. The victory was worth over $6,200 and was his first ever at the speedway. His dad Jim Mahaney won this event 1989, the same year Mike was born. Mahaney also locked up a guaranteed starting spot to the Race of Champions Dirt Small Block Friday night event at Selinsgrove Speedway on Friday, March 14th. Mahaney started on the outside of Willy Decker at the start and only lost the lead briefly to Bridgeport Speedway regular Dom Buffalino on his way to the popular win. Mahaney opted for a softer tire option that second place finisher Mike Ricci and third place finisher Pat Ward. Both Ricci and Ward would close in on Mahaney over longer green flag runs but several late race cautions did allow Ricci and Ward to get enough heat in their tires to keep pace. At the finish Ricci just edged Ward out for second place. Rusty Smith put on an impressive late race charge coming from 24th to fourth in his first Southern Tier 100 start. Buffalino wound up fifth in his first ever Southern Tier 100 start as well. Ironically three of the top five finishers (Ward, Smith and Buffalino) showed that practice makes perfect as they took advantage of the Friday night test session at the speedway. With his runner-up finish Ricci locked in a guaranteed starting spot to the New Egypt Speedway Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour Cabin Fever 60 on Saturday, March 22nd. In victory lane Mahaney commented, “This is the biggest win of my career, knowing my dad won this race and seeing the trophy at home all these years means the world to me.” He added, “This is just awesome.” Both Ricci and Ward shared the same post race sentiment as the late race cautions slowed their progress as they went with a harder American Racer 50 compound on their right rear than Mahaney did. Mike Wilmot backed up his Five Mile Point Speedway Track Championship by winning the IMCA Modified 25 lap Empire State Series event. He also locked up the Empire State Tour Championship with the win. Jon Carpenter pulled off a similar feat by winning the Track Championship in the Street Stock division at the speedway in August. His 40 lap Street Stock win paid him $2,000 but also made him the Race of Champions Tour Champ for the second straight year. Devon Bailey was the Four Cylinder winner, his first at the speedway.
