Great story from Soul Pancake about Millicent Mama Hill. When greeted by an interviewer, one of the first things she tells them is I take hugs. That gives a very good indication of the type of person youre about to meet. A retired teacher, Mama Hill turned her home into a safe-haven for the children in her neighborhood. And its a home that is nothing short of life-changing for the kids that visit. One of the benefits provided by Mamas home is a simple meal. As she explains, Sometimes the only meal they have is the meal that they get here. But in addition to the tangibles, theres something much deeper that goes on within the walls of the house. When they arrive, kids gather around in a circle to take a moment of silence, to remember the safety they share in the house where their problems are left outside, and they know during their time there its all about peace, for one hour. One of the topics for sharing in that hour are random acts of kindness the kids performed for others. Mama Hill is motivated by her philosophy that you cannot ask a child to pick up a pencil, to write anything until you have dealt with the whole child, that would be love, respect, self-esteem. Here we deal with the issues and the academia. Ultimately, theyre looking for family, theyre looking for somewhere they have love and to be accepted, and thats exactly what she aims to provide. Ive seen people who just had a moment of kindness or love and it changes their whole life. So I think its extremely important, I think its the most powerful force in the universe. One of the children, when asked about Mama Hill, reveals the depth and importance of Mama Hill to her: she showed me things, like, me not having a mom...{sobbing}...shes done so much for me, like, when I didnt have clothes she gave me clothes, food, she could have given up on me and just let me go and I still would have been a bad child, but, for her to still be here and still take care of me and help me like this, show me that she really care, that she really do love me. And when asked if she had to describe Mama Hill in one word, one eager, bright-eyed little girl quickly volunteers an answer. Angel. Full interview below: youtube/watch?v=chjHPSLapv8
