Greatest Computer Games of the 1990s #2: Civilization - 1991 Civilization is one game that I bought just because I thought the box art was interesting and it turned out not only to be a good game but one that has become a milestone game launching a continuing series of improved versions that continues to this day (Civilization V 2010 and Beyond Earth 2014). What made this game ground breaking was its depth. It allows the player to rule their own virtual civilization and compete with other computer run civilizations on a world map. You control the advancement of technology and social improvements, build a military and choose war or peace and explore the world trading and building a global economy. The game had replay-ability on an unprecedented level at the time with SimCity being perhaps the only competitor but Civ offered more depth but also a greater difficulty level.
