Greek Customs.The traditional Christmas boat. As a land of sea, Greece has the custom of the adornment of the traditional Christmas boat! The boat symbolizes the new tack of man in life, after the birth of Christ. The Greek Traditional Boat is a tradition of the old times of our country when children with love, joy and a creative mind used to make their own toys. The custom, however, was also a kind of honor and a welcoming gesture to the seafarers, who were returning from their travels. Fifty years ago, ie until the first postwar decade, the Decorated Boat was found in many Greek homes and into the hands of children who sang carols. Today, this tradition tends to disappear, as it has been replaced by the outlandish Christmas Tree. Since it was related to separations and unpleasant memories and as a vow of seafarers in times of distress at sea, the boat could not symbolize cozy family gatherings, with all members present, or to stimulate the family feeling. For this reason, the boat was rarely found decorated in Greek houses at Christmas. However, in the early 1970s, the removal issue of the Christmas tree had been intensively discussed in our country with the wish to be replaced by the Christmas Boat, as it combines tradition and ecological consciousness. The question of course was not as straightforward, since it presented irrefutable arguments from both sides, with references to ecological issues and suggestions from experts on the use of plants and trees, except fir. We should note that the Christmas tree has displaced the Traditional Boat that adorned the Greeks days of Christmas. In some areas (especially on islands) the Greeks still adorn boats, and in recent years there has been a commendable effort of some of the countrys municipalities, to restore the custom in its original form, by adorning their squares with boats instead of trees. However, the fresh branch always entered the Greek houses during the Christmas Holidays, to bring hope for a new year of flourishment, for a better future. In the special, brilliant decoration of the festive atmosphere of Christmas Day and the New coming Year, the Traditional Boat as well as the outlandish Christmas Tree will give a special touch in every home with their dominant, cheerful and vibrant colors.
